“Dear Dad,” is a film that peeks into the lives of your friends, brothers, cousins, co-workers, sons, and uncles. You'll meet 8 diverse same gender loving men living in "Black Gay Mecca"; Atlanta, GA. The project aims to give same gender loving men a platform to tell their varying yet universal stories about their relationship with their father and how it has shaped them as men. Ultimately, the documentary is meant to help these men and men like them appreciate what gave them hope and heal what gave them hurt.”
"Dear Dad: Letters from SGL Sons" premiered on Vimeo.com/8pp on August 31, 2013!
In 2009 I had a very candid conversation with a friend about his struggles dealing with the strained relationship he has with his parents, especially his father. It started off as a check in and quickly became a venting session and ended up as a cathartic moment for him. He shared so many intensely personal stories, painful situations, things that made him feel deep shame. There was nothing that he said that could compare to the look in his eyes. He was holding on to a tremendous amount of hurt and pain. I would never forget that look. That look, planted a seed in my mind. That seed germinated over time and became this project.
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
- The subject interviews started December 2011 and ended November 2012.
It was edited using Adobe Premiere Pro CS.6.
The entire film was shot with Canon T1i & Canon 60D, audio equipment was utilized when available.
The project was filmed guerrilla style. I wanted to capture the stories as organically as possible.
Dear Dad was initially developed as a web series, however after some thought I decided to create a documentary-esque film instead
